In a significant event, a giant tug named Maha Weva anchored at Vizhinjam Port to undertake a special mission of transporting two vessels from there. The vessel arrived from Trincomalee port in Sri Lanka on Thursday evening and docked at the old wharf. It was tasked to transport two vessels -dredger Shanti Sagar and tug Jalashwa-5 – back to Trincomalee port.
These vessels are associated with the shipping operations of the Adani Port Company. Sources said the dredger was transported to develop Adani’s West Container Terminal at Colombo.
Dredger Shanti Sagar was successfully towed away on Friday morning. The second vessel Jalashwa-5 is scheduled to be transported next week. Prior to their departure, both vessels underwent sanitation activities to secure the necessary Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate and Medical Chest Certificate.
The crew onboard consisted of 14 Sri Lankan citizens, who, along with the tug, underwent immigration and customs inspections. The Indian registrar of shipping oversaw the towing inspection to ensure safety and compliance. The tug, with the dredger in tow, is expected to complete its journey to Trincomalee within a day and a half.
